To many Americans, Eastern Orthodoxy seems limited to such communities as the Greek churches. The Greek Orthodox Church became primarily known for its annual festivals. The Evangelical and Orthodox worlds become isolated from each other. Many Christians consider Eastern Orthodoxy compares to Roman Catholicism however, without a Pope. For that reason beginning in the 1980’s thousands of evangelical pastors converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. Missionaries and Artists also converted to Eastern Orthodoxy. The Orthodox Church in America then experienced the largest mass conversions in its history.
Dr. Robert Morey spent over five years investigating the truth claims of Eastern Orthodoxy. Dr. Morey traced the historical and philosophic origins of orthodox doctrines and rituals. Then Dr. Morey wrote the Evangelical response to Eastern Orthodoxy. This work received international recognition for the careful scholarship. The task; to define ,document, and show the history of the rituals of Eastern Orthodoxy. Also, this difficult task took several years. Why? First of all academic research and various church visits take time. Most noteworthy Orthodox materials takes time for reading and studying! Dr. Morey’s objective to inform and consequently not to offend the Orthodox church. Some Orthodox priests have no understanding of Dr. Morey’s desire to know what they believe. He also desires to know why they believe what they do. Today political correctness reduces religion to personal preferences. Similarly, like selecting your own favorite flavor of ice cream. However, personal preferences know nothing about truth and morals. In contrast personal preferences teach nothing about theology, in fact they teach – nothing. With these introductory statements, we begin the analysis of the question.
