Description
Geneva vs. Rome a debate
Geneva vs Rome a debate. Dr. Morey begins this debate, spoken of as a friendly debate, between Dr. Festigi and Dr. Morey. Dr. Festigi representing the Roman position. Dr. Morey representing the reformed position. As a result this debate means to inform and not to offend. Above all this brings to light the classic conflict that exists between Roman theology and Reformed theology. This conflict concerns the subject of justification which divided these two areas of theology. Firstly according to the reformed church justification occurs as a completed act. Secondly Justification becomes an act of God as a judge working on the ungodly.
Justification declares a person guilty or innocent in the sight of God. There exists only a guilty or innocent verdict. Justification stands as a work of God and not a work of faith. Received through faith justification occurs independent of the works of the Law. Rome taught that justification came through baptism not through faith. Also to the Roman church justification exists as an on going continuing event.
Geneva vs.Rome a debate. Reformers made a distinction between regeneration and Justification. Justification, becomes your personal record of guilt or innocence held in heaven. On the other hand sanctification occurs where someone becomes righteous through the work of God. For instance we also hear the gift of justification comes to pass as a free gift from God. After Dr. Morey expounds on the reformed position he then proposes questions for Dr. Festigi to answer.
Geneva vs. Rome a debate
Dr. Festigi now speaks his defense of the Roman position. Catholicism teaches salvation stands as an unmerited gift from God. The next tenet tells us that justification transpires through man’s own works. The Catholic Church wishes for all people to be saved. (This opposes the reformed position of the elect gaining salvation.) Dr. Festigi speaks about non-believers receiving salvation by their own works. Or by following the dictates of their conscience.
