Description
Doctrine of Hell
The teaching of our Savior on the subject of hell becomes important because He is the very incarnation of the love of God (John 3:16; Rom. 5:8). If the very personification of the love of God taught the doctrine of the eternal conscious torment of unbelievers in hell, this forever destroys the common ad hominem argument that the doctrine of hell is not “loving.”
1. John the Baptist predicted that the coming Messiah would not only bless believers with the Holy Spirit, but He would also “burn” unbelievers with “unquenchable fire” (Matt. 3:11-12; Lk. 3:16-17).
2. Jesus taught that man’s soul prevails as immortal (Lk. 12:4) and that consciousness remains after the death of the body (Matt. 22:32).
3. Jesus, above all, taught that both the righteous and the wicked would be bodily resurrected on the Day of Judgment (John 5:28-29; 11:23-26). On the Day of Judgment, He will decide the eternal destiny of all men (Matt. 7:21-23; 25:31-46).
4. Jesus similarly taught that the wicked would be thrown into Gehenna, the place of eternal punishment, where they will be tormented with unquenchable fire and never-dying worms, where they will experience weeping and gnashing of teeth for all eternity.
That, in conclusion, Jesus taught the doctrine of eternal conscious punishment cannot be denied. If you interpret the Gospels according the principles of historical, and grammatical hermeneutics. Consequently Jesus preached more about hell than He preached about heaven. This indicates to us that we must warn people of the wrath to come.
