Chapter 8:1-4. We find two characters involved in the first vignette, Jesus and a leper. On the mountain (Sermon on the Mount) we hear Jesus’ words. In the valley we see Jesus’ works. Here we see Jesus living to what he teaches. His words match His actions.
Disc #2 “Jesus is astonished” – Matt 8:5-13. Now Jesus deals with a gentile to show His compassion for all. Dr. Bob explains a lot about the various books and for whom they were written. Matthew written for the Jews showing what Jesus said. Mark written for the Italians, what did Jesus do. Luke was a biographer, he interviewed the people and wrote the story as Luke heard it. Cameos of Christ (10 CDs), more information
Disc #3 ” The Touch of Christ” – Continuing with Matthew 8:14-15. Jesus judges the heart of man not the outside aspects. Above all the author shows that Jesus is a willing savior. This miracle shows the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law. “He touched her and the fever left her. She got up and began to serve Him.” In the Synagogue Jesus heals a demoniac. There happens to be more information contained in the synoptic Gospels, Mark, and Luke.
Disc #4 “Part 1 The Call of Christ” (part 1) – Matt. 8:18-27 Tells about the cost of a call from Jesus. No volunteers accepted only those called by Jesus. A teach/lawyer approached Jesus to volunteer to follow Jesus. Jesus declined to have that man to follow Him. Volunteers would have a reason to brag that they “helped” Jesus. Those called just followed Jesus at His request. Then Dr. Morey explains about how and when the Apostles worked with Jesus. The call from Jesus! We also see a couple more men who Jesus calls to follow Him. These two make an excuse not to follow Jesus, immediately. One such excuse concerned burying the man’s father, putting man first over God. Consider these three items, 1) obedience to God’s call; 2) prioritize your answer; 3) fool not the Lord in service to the Lord.
Cameos of Christ, continuing explanation
Disc #5 “Part 2 of The Call” – Matt 8 Here the author talks about Christ’s call as a miracle, using a crooked stick to draw straight lines. In addition all men sin and fall short of the glory of God. So why would God use any man to preach His word. Why would God call any man to ministry? This disc revisits the calls of Jesus and the results. Similarly, giving a deeper explanation to the miracle of the calls. A call requires the called to always to put God first. When God calls a person they must accept without any excuses! OBEDIENCE!
Disc #6 “Power of Christ” – Now we hear a discussion of the difference between “power” and “authority”. Someone with power does not have to have authority. The reverse is also true if they have authority but not necessarily power. However, Dr. Morey explains that Jesus Christ had both power and authority! Jesus’ words have power, however, His words also have authority! People were amazed at the power and authority of the words Jesus spoke. Jesus healed a leper; healed the servant of a Centurion; finally Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law. These vignettes show the power and authority of Jesus’ words and actions.
Cameos of Christ, still more information
Disc #7 “Identity of Christ” – Matthew 8:27 the question arises “Who is this man?” The answer comes in the next vignette. Here we learn that Jesus was known by others than His disciples. When their boat landed on the shore two demon possessed men approached Jesus. They were so violent that no one could pass by. Jesus called these unclean demons to come out of the men. Jesus asked the name of the demons. They answered “We are legion!” So we hear the demons asking Jesus, “What do you want with us, Son of God?” We find out Christ’s identity from a new source. The unclean demons asked to go into the pig herd that was nearby. Jesus told them to “GO!” They went into the herd of swine, in conclusion, the swine then ran to the the cliff edge and fell into the sea and died.
Disc #8 “Understanding of Christ” – Dr. Morey teaches that we need not worry about the aspects of life because we have the Lord. If we understand the power, the touch, and the call of Jesus we need not worry! Matthew builds each miracle on each to show Jesus as the Son of God. Miracle number one Jesus heals the leper. The second miracle He heals the servant of a Centurion. Third miracle the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law. Continuing to build miracle on miracle we find Jesus raising the daughter of a leader of a synagogue. That is the climax of the miracles so far. Therefore, we find that Jesus understands the heart of sinners. If you feel powerless in any area, ask God for the power that you lack.
Cameos of Christ (10 CDs), final vignettes
Disc #9 “Availability of Christ” – The cameos we have seen so far, point up the availability of Christ. Jesus accepts all people even the ones overlooked by the Pharisees. Each “miracle” show that Jesus is available to those who needed His power, understanding, and His Identity. An example is the woman whose bleeding for twelve years was healed when she touched Jesus. Therefore, His availability was proven for those who read and believe the Gospel.
Disc #10 “Christ’s Mercy” – Now we move into Matthew 9 for this vignette. On the road between the two Jericho sat two blind men. They called out to Jesus – persistently, as He passed by. The Messiah told the crowd to bring the men to Him. In His compassion, mercy Jesus asked what the men wanted. They answered we wish to have our sight. Jesus told them to “Go your faith has healed you”, and they were able to see. Above all remember Jesus was shown to have a willingness to heal; He was astonished that the Centurion had that deep a faith. In conclusion, all the vignettes show some aspect of Jesus that is important to knowing Him.
