God’s glory is the overarching theme of this psalm.  His creation of man, in His image, and His placement of man in an honored position of dominion over the earth, is ultimately designed for His own eternal glory.

As the translator of the Book of the Psalms for the ISV, Dr. Morey is uniquely qualified to comment on the Messianic Psalms. With his vast knowledge of the Jewish and Christian literature on the Psalms, he is able to give a scholarly, yet profound interpretation of the Psalms quoted in the New Testament as prophecies of Messiah Jesus. If you want an in-depth study that touches the heart as well as the mind, this series of lectures will prove to be a blessing.

Description

Messianic Psalms: Psalm 8

Messianic Psalms: Psalm 8:  Psalm 8 continues as the second Messianic psalm used in the new testament.  This psalm refers directly to Jesus Christ.  This psalm like most of them stands written by King David.  We know that the author writes about Jesus, because the description prevails of an unregenerate man.  And from scripture we know that King David possessed his faults.  Psalms act as hymns.   A message to the choir director tells them which music to use.  This psalm belongs to a group used at harvest time.  Young girls stomped our the grapes singing psalms, joyous psalms.

The use of Psalm 8 in the new testament becomes evident as we read.  In Matthew Jesus quotes this psalm and applies it to Himself.  Two points arise in this Psalm first the majesty of God.  The second point subsists concerning the dignity of man.  The words at beginning and end of this Psalm once more declare the majesty of God.  But the bulk of this Psalm deals with the dignity of man.  It appears that the dignity of man stems from the majesty of God.  Man without God shows no meaning.  Since God created man in his image.  Otherwise the world bears no meaning, morals, or even beauty.
